Enrich Your Mind By Reading
The best types of hobbies help to enrich your mind and calm your spirit. Reading definitely falls under these categories. It doesn’t really matter what you read, as long as you’re in a quiet, tranquil location and are able to concentrate fully on the material.
Generally, the best reading materials are books. While magazines and newspapers are great, they may be clouded with advertising and hidden agendas. They are also difficult to ‘get into’ long-term, as they are broken up into various short editorials and articles.
When choosing a book to read, think back to your childhood. What kind of stories piqued your interest back then? Fiction is always a great choice, especially mystery and narratives. Consider looking at a best- selling list in order to choose one. Better yet, visit your local library and check out a few titles that seem interesting. That way you can explore your interests at no risk to you.
If you prefer non-fiction books, then memoirs and religious texts are great places to start. These books help you to connect with people or ideas that you are interested in. There are also thousands (maybe millions!) of how-to books, if you’ve always been interested in learning about a new hobby. Self-help and self- improvement books also provide the positive lift you may need at this point in time.
Consider attending a book swap so that you can trade novels with people you know and like. Your favorite book is just around the corner!
Writing Your Troubles Away
Have you ever considered writing as a possible hobby? We’ve all written something at some point or another. Chances are, you learned quite a bit about grammar and syntax in school. But have you ever explored it as a journey into your soul?
The great thing about writing is that there are literally no rules. Sure, there are standard rules of English and spelling, but those don’t mean a thing unless you’re writing for someone else. Try writing for yourself first. Start a journal and write down your observations. How do you feel today? What are you excited about? What are your goals?
It’s a good idea to bring your journal with you to several different locations. Sometimes the best places to get inspiration are those which strike the spirit and inspire new words. These include beautiful locations such as beaches, parks, and mountains.
But even if none of these gorgeous locales is near your home, you can find a place of solitude quite easily, sometimes in your own back yard. Take a walk around your neighborhood and look for a quiet place to sit and think. Maybe it will be a small patch of grass, or the space under a large oak tree.
Writing can unleash your wildest thoughts and dreams. It can bring you inward to a place you didn’t know existed. And, at the very least, it can give you a fun thing to do on a slow Saturday afternoon.
